"Super" Dan Petrescu, was a fabulous wing back but however he could not defend, Steve Clarke was incredibly reliable and Albert Ferrer was decent but I would have to go for Ron "chopper" Harris as the best right back.
Centre backs
Frank Lebouef was a very decent ball playing defender, but maybe let down by his defensive qualities. Gary Chivers and Colin Pates had been quite very good defenders.
William Gallas and Ricardo Carvalho would certainly have been in my team if not the two that I have actually picked. But my two centre backs are Marcel Desailly and John Terry.
Midfield
There have been lots of good players in Chelsea midfield and I have gone for 3 players in the midfield. Players like Michael Essien, Ray Wilkins, Gus Poyet, Roberto Di Matteo, Dennis Wise, Clive Walker and John Bumstead deserve mentions.
But I have gone for Claude Makelele who is 1 of the most useful players ever to have in any team, Frank Lampard for his aim and running power and Alan Hudson for his creativity
Forward/Strikers
I have also gone for 3 players and I have to pay homage to players like Kerry Dixon, Gianluca Vialli, Mark Hughes, Arjen Robben, Joe Cole, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Eidur Gudjohnssen and Bobby Tambling but I have picked Didier Drogba for his energy and unselfishness, Peter Osgood and the greatest player to have ever played for Chelsea and that's Gianfranco Zola for his genius.
On the 30th of May 2010, fans of Chelsea FC didn't have a care in the world. They had just noticed their side take a one-nil victory at Wembley to secure the league and cup double for the fist time in their 105 year history. In his first season as manager, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti guided his team to both the Premier League and FA cup titles, scoring record quantity of goals in the process. So how is it that, 1 year on, Chelsea are reflecting on such a poor season, in which, for only the third time in Roman Abromavich's reign as owner, they have failed to win a single trophy?
Several people would point out the reality that Chelsea let a quantity of experienced players leave the club in the summer of 2010. Players like Deco, Ballack and Belletti nonetheless had plenty to offer you the Chelsea squad, regardless of their age. It was a mistake by Ancelotti to let them go for no cost, leaving the squad dangerously short of cover. Only two players (Brazilian international Ramires and Premier League veteran Yossi Benayoun) joined Chelsea to replace those that left and, although they have had good seasons, they haven't been enough to make up for all the high quality lost. The January additions of Torres and David Luiz were too small too late, especially with the former in dismal form.
Yet another important factor in Chelsea's demise this season has been the sacking of well-known and profitable assistant manager, Ray Wilkins. He was observed as a essential link in between the manager and the players, having been at the club longer than Ancelotti. The choice to sack him final Autumn was inexplicable, and results turned soon soon after he left, with Chelsea thrashed 3-nil by Sunderland the quite next week.
